Student blog posts

Over the next few days, I will be adding new blog posts.  Each blog post was written, edited, and typed by each student.  This is all of their work in a way that makes sense to them.  I have fine print at the bottom to help "translate" if needed.

I asked the students to write about two questions:

Why is this author your favorite?
What would you like to teach someone about your author?

They took a photograph to go with their writing.  They are very excited to share their work!

Author studies

Your children may have been coming home with talks of studying various authors.  This year I introduced 5 well-known children's authors to the group.  Some of the stories they knew of already, but we looked at them with different eyes.  The goal was to learn more about each author's body of work.  What did they like to write about?  What do you think their purpose was?  How do their illustrations connect to their words?  Who is their audience?

Each day we read a book and discussed multiple questions to help understand the author more.  We found connections between stories, hidden characters, and new ideas.

I then asked each student to choose their favorite out of the 5 we had studied.  It was their turn to become an author.  They now had the chance to teach others what they had learned.  I talked about this blog and said they would get a chance to contribute.

Once they decided on an author, they wrote down their ideas.  They edited their work, and started typing this week!

True, not true, and "kind of"

The children got the chance to reflect on their original ideas about force and motion.  Each post-it note was removed from the poster and discussed.  After some long debates, each original idea had a permanent home.  Some ideas were true and right all along.  Some were not true.  And then there were some that caused quite a large debate.

Original idea:  Force is someone pushing you and you don't like it.
Children's thought process:  Force is a push or a pull.  So if someone pushed you, that's a force.  But does force also mean you don't like it?

Original idea:  Force is from Star Wars.  You put your hand out.
Children's thought process:  Darth Vader uses "the force" and it is really important to him.  "The force" is real in the world of Star Wars.  But not in the science world we are practicing.

Original idea:  Force is being brave, strong, and ready for war.
Children's thought process:  If you fight, you will use force to push someone or swing a sword.  You need to use force in a war, but being brave doesn't mean you're going to use force.  Force is a push or pull, but not a feeling in your heart.

It was very hard to come to a conclusion on those three ideas.  So someone suggested a "kind of" category where those could be placed.  Everyone agreed.  Those three ideas were kind of true.

Have the children talked about any of these terms at home?  See what they have to say!

A mystery letter in the mail...

One day a large envelope came to our school.  It was addressed to our class!  The children had no idea what it was.  The return address was from a place they had never heard of.  I opened it up and read the letter on the inside.

Good Morning!  We are at the ECEC in room 8.  We are 4, 5, and 6 years old  We like magnatiles, our toys, to build, play outside, and our restaurant names Great 8 Eats!  What do you like to do?

As a class, we discussed the letter and compared their words to our thoughts.  We liked to build too!  Along with the letter came individual pieces of paper written by each student.  I read through the pages and we got to know the new children.

We had to respond!  We talked about how to write a letter.  Then then we answered their questions.  Then we asked a new one!

We are patiently waiting for their response.
